Trends in Custom Homes Design 2022

We've gained perspective and wisdom about our homes as we settle into a new normal post-pandemic. Homeowners have gained a greater understanding of what they need from the places in which they choose to live. This is the guiding principle behind all the trends we see in 2022. These trends encourage self-expression and self-reflection by combining bold colors with unusual patterns and textures.

Greens and Browns

BROWN is back, after years in decline. In custom homes, brown is being accepted more than ever. In addition to this, the growing popularity and obsession with GREEN we witnessed in last year's second half has now become a major concern. Many of the homes we are currently building or just completed have rich, deep green tones. Is it a coincidence that two of Mother Nature's most beautiful colors have been adopted after several years of pandemic living?

Natural Elements

For the foreseeable future, it seems like the trend of infusing nature-inspired surfaces with objects into our homes is going to be a thing. It is essential to bring natural light and quality ventilation into every space. Organic materials like wood, stone, and hand-crafted masonry are still very popular. We will see a more floral, animal, and botanical-inspired designs in fabric, wallpaper, as well. In interior and architecture design, Biophilic Design means creating a visual connection and enjoying the positive health- and environmental benefits.

Bathrooms and Kitchens with Dark Cabinets

One trend that is rapidly gaining popularity has surprised many homeowners. Interior designers love dark, moody bathrooms. This trend is being embraced by some clients while others remain skeptical. We have thoroughly enjoyed watching our homeowners take risks with the bathrooms and kitchens they design over the last few months. They are eager to see the effect these spaces have on their moods and drama, and we are as well!

Bold Colors and Bold Patterns

Contrary to the "dark kitchen" trend, this trend seems to be being adopted by almost everyone. Both interior designers and homeowners want to incorporate bold colors in their homes. If homeowners don't feel ready to take on a deep dive with dark kitchens, bold colors and patterns can be an option. Each person is encouraged by the others to select deep, rich colors that they love and to layer them in with unusual patterns and accents... to create a look that's uniquely and personally theirs.

Vintage and Sustainable Accents

Gone are the days when furniture and other materials could be matched. We've learned to appreciate the beauty in unique handmade furnishings, textiles, and decor. With the rise of the "grand millennial", aka granny style, and the push toward repurposing as well sustainability, it is becoming more fashionable to embrace vintage. You will reap many benefits such as better quality, longer-lasting products, local artists and small business support, and a stronger connection to what you surround yourself with.

Mixing Patterns with Textures

Layering patterns, textures, or materials in a single space is a popular trend. This is because of thoughtful layering. Mixing a variety of textures and patterns in a space can add depth and visual stimulation. Some homeowners are happy to have a carefully edited mix of patterns. Others embrace the creativity and joy that comes from mixing.

Curved Furniture Pieces

In recent years, we've seen an increase in organic lines and sculptures. The trend for 2022 is no exception. Wall finishes and tile design are exploring sloped, curved silhouettes and asymmetrical shapes. This is consistent in the creativity and uniqueness evident in all of the above trends.

Mindful Spaces

Every homeowner has realized the importance of having a quiet area in their home to recharge and reflect. Many homeowners have taken a more deliberate approach to design this space into their homes. We've included prayer rooms as well as spa-like bathrooms, meditation zen dens, steam showers, personal saunas, and many more. Although the decor and hard finishes vary depending upon personal taste, the aim is the same: Create an environment that promotes mindfulness and presence in daily life.

As you imagine what your home might look like in the coming year you might incorporate some of these trends. This is the essence and purpose of each design trend for the year. You can create the home you desire and love. Happy curating!
