It's hot out so people are considering their air conditioning units. Are they necessary? How often? The last thing you want to happen is for your ACs to stop working on a hot day.

Can I Maintain my AC?

You should maintain your air conditioner just like any other mechanical component (e.g. Like your furnace or car's engine, you should maintain your air conditioner. AC units are the most important in summer. If you don't need them, it is best to have them serviced during spring when the temperature is still comfortable.

One of our most frequently asked questions is, "How often should I service my home's air conditioner unit?" We recommend that your AC unit be serviced at least once a month. The same applies to your heating system. If the spring rolls around you can turn it on to test if it's working well.

If everything is working properly, you don't have to call someone. You can change the air filters yourself. Locate the filter hole on the unit and follow the instructions. Slide the old filter out and replace it with a brand new one. As you do so, note which side of the air filter is facing inward. Before changing the filter, read the instructions from the manufacturer about the type of filter that you should use and how it should be replaced.

Note: AC filters are to be replaced every 90 days at the most. If the homeowner has children or pets with allergies, it may be more frequent.

If your AC unit starts making strange noises, or it stops blowing cold water, it is time to call a professional. It is important not to run your AC unit at the first sign of trouble. Doing so can cause additional damage and make it more expensive.
