Can you wear white to a photoshoot?

Parents often ask me what to wear to their family photo shoot. While I can give you some ideas and tips for outfits, you and your family must be true to yourself. As we are capturing the memories, I don't want you to dictate your wardrobe. It might be essential to capture your children as they are so that you can preserve their memories. Here are some tips to help you create a styled look for your photographs. Make sure you let your personality shine through.

Be comfortable

Do not dress up for the photo shoot. For outdoor and indoor family sessions, casual clothes like jeans, a light shirt or blouse, or a floaty gown work well. Starched shirts or Sunday best will make you feel more formal, making it difficult to feel relaxed and present. It is essential to feel comfortable and be you.

Consider the location for the photoshoot.

Consider the background we are shooting against when choosing outfits and colors. Consider using colors and tones that match the décor and styling of your home, especially if the photos are to be displayed as wall art. It is a good idea to keep it neutral.

Summer shorts and tees are perfect for casual wear, as well as summer dresses. There is plenty of bright-green outdoors, so consider complementary pastels in addition to natural shades. Soft blues, dusty rose pinks and dove grays are great spring colors that work well against cherry and apple blossoms.

Primary colors are not my favorite. Bright colors can create a color cast so avoid red. Choose shades such as blue-gray, cream and hues of pink, or soft green. As you can see, richer colors can impact your photo shoot, depending on where it is taking place and when it is happening. For example, olive, forest green, indigo, and dark purple are great options for family photos. Photos of solid White can look flat, so choose a lighter shade such as ivory or light cream.

Match but coordinate

For a cohesive look, it is a good idea to coordinate the outfits of everyone in your family. Pick 3-4 colors that are complementary but not all the same. Photos of everyone in blue jeans and white shirts look dated and unprofessional. Let the individual personalities of each person shine through.

Shoes are an essential part of the overall outfit. For children younger than 5 years old, wellies are a great choice. They allow you to jump in puddles and are suitable for autumn and winter. At home, I prefer to have my feet bare. But if you want to wear socks, ensure they don't have holes.
