Historical significance of Hereford Priory

Located on the banks of the Wye, Hereford is the county town of Herefordshire. It is the largest town in the county. The town is known for its half-timbered cottages. It also has a cathedral. During the Middle Ages, Hereford was an important part of the Welsh border warfare.

The Priory was founded in the late twelfth century by a member of the ruling Saxon family. The Priory was initially a Benedictine priory. In the thirteenth century, the Priory became a priory under the rule of Reading Abbey. The Priory was patronised by Hugh de Lacy. The church was constructed between 1180 and 1230. It has a mixture of Norman round-headed arches and Gothic pointed arches. Its west door is intricately carved.

In the Fifteenth century, the church was extended with a west tower. The original roof was formed from a series of domes. The south aisle was added in the Decorated style almost a century later. The original porch was moved out to make way for the south aisle.

In the 16th century, the Dragon on the west wall of the church was displayed. The origin of the dragon is unknown. It was also associated with the Abbey of Gloucester.

The Priory had a chapel dedicated to St David. The cloisters were located south of the nave.
