Whimsical meets colorful on this little wedding day in the backyard! We are here for the vibrant flowers, chic wedding dress, and the most adorable invitations and stationery designed by the bride herself! When Megan + Mitchell first started planning their wedding in 2020, they envisioned a big party full of fun with loved ones. Unfortunately, like other couples, they had to downsize their guest list, but that gave them flexibility to get creative with decor and budget! The result is an explosion of color, moody, and sweet feelings!
We had started planning a much bigger wedding before the pandemic, and while there were a lot of things we had sadly lost from our original plan, if we were forced to switch to a micro-wedding we could definitely get more creative . In terms of budget, it also gave us a lot more flexibility. We asked some of our local friends (who were all Covid tested before the big day) to help us take photos and video, bake our wedding cake and celebrate the wedding which was taking place in our own back yard. We couldn’t have done that with a wedding of more than 200 people. Now we can look outside and remember how special it was every day!

The most adorable invitations we’ve ever seen
We love our couples get creative, but we have to take our hat off of bride Megan Roy for these sassy and whimsical invitations. M is such a talented illustrator and her designs really show the couple’s personality!
The bride and groom
M looks stunning in this sleek and modern BHLDN dress. We needed to know more !!
A lot of people have had this experience, but I had a completely different dress than I thought. In the beginning it was all about tulle, texture and big fun skirts and I wanted something really unconventional but still romantic. I went shopping with other people twice and tried a lot of these things, but always felt disappointed and wasn’t sure why. Finally, I went to an appointment alone and tried on the dress I was given. In the others, I felt like I was wearing a bridal costume, but in that dress, I just felt like me. After that, it was a breeze.
Va-Va-VOOM! These brightly colored flowers from Shindig Chic look good enough to eat! We love the vibrant oranges and yellows. Such a fun way to spice up a little backyard wedding.
Elwynn & Cass designed M’s updo and perfectly natural makeup look. So beautiful!
We love M’s two-tone Zara clothing! It is the perfect complement to M’s elegant wedding dress.
The first look
MITCHELL First look. I pretty much insisted not to see Megan’s dress, and I didn’t want to know any details about what she would look like before the wedding itself. I was blown away the first time I opened my eyes to see her standing next to me. Her dress was so typical of her: understated in the same way she was, yet it made a statement in most Megan ways. After nine years together I still had one of them: “I’m the luckiest guy in the world.” I can honestly say that the first look was not only the best moment of the whole day for me, but also one of the best moments of my life.
Megan: There were a few highlights for me! The first was when we exchanged gifts and found that without ever talking about it, we had given the exact same gift to each other. The second was to get some very funny, unexpected video messages from my part of the wedding reception that couldn’t be there because of Covid. The third was when our friends Mary and George (Mary was also our photographer, and George was our officer!) Surprised us with something special that they’d been clinging to for nearly a decade. (The story is below!)
Small backyard wedding ceremony
They say it takes a village and the friends of M + M were on board to make their day unforgettable. Her dear friend George Hrico led the ceremony with the perfect mix of tears and giggles.
The best thing about a backyard wedding? Your furry family gets and automatically invite you!
Can you believe M + M’s story about this little sketch? Talk about fate!
When we first met, Mitchell and I went to the Alcove Cafe in Los Feliz to eat and sat at the back of the table, which looks like a chess board and has small drawers on the side. This is a cherished secret in Los Angeles, but this table is special because a lot of the people who sit there leave notes in those drawers and half the fun of sitting there is going through them all and the secrets and stories and Reading love letters that have been left behind. When we got our receipt, Mitchell turned it over and pulled us onto our backs with a heart balloon. The balloon read “M from NH + M from LA”. He stuffed it in the drawer and we left and didn’t think about it anymore.
Until Mary and George (our photographer and officer!) Revealed on our wedding day that they had gone to the same restaurant, sat at the same table, and accidentally stumbled upon our drawing not long after we arrived. Knowing it had to be ours, they took it and gave it back to us nine years later. An incredible surprise and a very special memory from the beginning of our relationship!
Processional: Has no! We just went outside and did the damn thing.
Recession: We turned down the volume on our playlist during the ceremony, but when it ended our friend Mike grabbed the speaker and turned it back up. It could have been literally anything – our playlist contained over 22 hours of music – but what boomed from the speaker was Madonna’s Holiday. It was kind of perfect and this is our song forever.
First dance: We didn’t want to do a first dance, but our friends insisted, so we put on Father John Misty’s “When You Smile and Stride Me”.

How cute are these place cards ?!
Megan drew all of the pets on each person’s business card for the dining room table. M + M love animals and it was such a sweet personal nod!
Seriously, M is so extremely talented! These paper goods are stealing the show!

M + M’s friend Jennie Palluzzi made her wedding cake that had the cutest hidden heart inside.
Newlyweds at the golden hour
Get things done as early as possible. There is no reason not to. Oh, unless there is an unexpected global pandemic then you scrap everything three, four or five times, start from scratch and you can balance all the moving parts very nicely while at the same time caring for your stubborn parents (who you very much love) explain. Hello mom and dad) that they are “not allowed” to fly to California right now. Kidding, kind of. Our real advice is to trust your instincts! Always!
Having a wedding in 2020 wasn’t easy, but it put a lot of things into perspective. Ultimately, the wedding is only one day, we have the rest of our lives to celebrate with everyone who couldn’t be there in person, and we can guarantee that we will celebrate a long time to make amends for all the things that we do missed the past year!
Congratulations Megan + Mitchell! Their little backyard wedding had tons of creativity, color, and love. We are sure that other couples will dream of how they can ALSO plan a breathtaking and memorable micro-wedding. Thank you for showing us all how to pan but it’s still fun! Send our best wishes! -The GWS team
